Indiana Jones and the Thursday release

The new Indiana Jones flick hits today. I’m dying to be excited for this, but my fear outweighs that excitement considerably. It’s not that Harrison is too old. It’s not the Spielberg hasn’t inspired me much lately. It’s not even that Shia LaBeouf is a festering turd of an actor. No, it’s that George Lucas had a large stake in writing this film.

George used to be great. Never a great writer, but his imagination was always something special. I don’t know what happened to George that killed that spark. Maybe it was his divorce, maybe it was raising kids, maybe it was surrounding himself with sycophantic yes men and banishing all forms of critical opinion of his work. All I know is that George has lost whatever something it was that gave us THX-1138, American Graffiti, and the Star Wars trilogy.

Apparently there was a script for Indy 4 a number of years back that everyone was excited about doing. Except for George. George said “I can write a better script than this”. This is the Man who had just finished writing and directing the critically panned Prequel trilogy, whose main complaint was always the writing.

What am I going to feel walking into that theatre? Fear. I hope it’s not justified.
