A pleasant surprise from my childhood

Often I’ve revisited the loves of my youth only to be disappointed. Thundercats is beyond unwatchable. MASK is a tragedy. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is heart breaking. Silverhawks is a travesty. COPS is practically criminal.

Thankfully there are some shows that have withstood the test of time. I recently picked up the complete Real Ghostbusters and it is just as good, if not better today than it was when I first watched it. “Better?” you ask, how can it be better? Well, RGB was a really cleverly written show, with many an in-joke that would only be appreciated by an adult audience.

Beyond all the jokes and references that sailed over my head when I was a kid, this show is a really intriguing and effective mix of comedy and horror. The show can be genuinely scary. I’m still working through the first 2 seasons but so far I’ve not come across a bad episode. I am thankfully still in the seasons before Slimer was made the primary focus, and I know I can expect things to begin sliding downhill when that happens.

Still, there’s going to be plenty of awesome episodes before that happens. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to get back to watching ghostbusters.
