Why are there beans on the ceiling?

As an experienced English teacher, Geoff, allow me to clear up your misconception. Those are not ceiling “beans,” they’re ceiling “beams,” horizontal supports used to hold up the roof over your head. There are beams on your ceiling because the hard-working men of a professional construction firm put them there, presumably at the behest of the architect who designed the structure in question.
For more information, consult your friendly neighborhood council of civil engineers (or, failing that, your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is also likely to know a lot about ceiling beams). ^_^
