The Review:

Here we have yet another JMS episode that deals with the film continuity directly. One of my favourite features of The Real Ghostbusters as a series is the way it built its own continuity by making the film a product of the world of the animated series, as opposed to the other way around.

This episode is told in flashback as Peter tells the story to a reporter and picks up right where the movie ended, with the boys arriving back at the demolished firehouse. JMS uses this opportunity to take care of a few things. First, he explains why the Ghostbusters have different coloured uniforms. Egon informs the guys that they have to destroy their current uniforms because they absorbed a “frightening” amount of paranormal energy during their battle with Gozer. Luckily, it turns out Janine had ordered new uniforms for the guys which had arrived just before they left to fight Gozer.

Secondly, JMS address why the Ghostbusters keep Slimer around. It turns out that while the rest of the ghosts escaped when the containment unit blew, Slimer stuck around. Janine suggests that maybe he’s lonely and they guys are the only people that have ever paid attention to him. The Ghostbusters dismiss this idea at first, but over the course of the episode that theory seems to pan out. Egon in particular is interested in having Slimer around as it provides him with a unique scientific opportunity to study a ghost up close.

The main conflict of the episode comes in a clever doppelganger twist. Instead of destroying the old uniforms as instructed by Egon, Peter tosses them into a box which gets stored near the containment unit. Unfortunately the containment unit still had a few leaks yet to be detected and mended. The uniforms continued to absorb psycho kinetic energy until they literally get up and walk away, but not before taking on the ghostly form of the four Ghostbusters.

Egon explains that PK energy is acting on the psychic imprint each of them has left on their uniform, thus creating the 4 phantom Ghostbusters. Inevitably there is a showdown between the Real Ghostbusters and the paranormal impostors. During this battle Slimer comes to the rescue, drawing the phantoms fire long enough to deplete their energy, allowing the Ghostbusters to capture.

This is another great episode, with lots of clever gags, exciting moments and a really clever premise that enriches the universe of the franchise. We’re getting close to the end of the ABC episodes now. 2 more to go before we make it to the syndicated season. I’m really excited!

Best line of the episode:

Egon (to Peter) – “I’m not going to talk to you again for at least a week. It’s not good for me.”

Rating: 5 out of 5 on the PKE meter
