The Real Ghostbusters episode 18 review

The Real Ghostbusters

Episode 018

Production number 76005 – 1986-Syndicated

“The Spirit of Aunt Lois”

Written by Richard Mueller

Plot Synopsis:

Ray’s aunt Lois invites the boys to her home to witness a seance held by renowned TV spiritualist Dr. Bassingame. Things go horribly wrong when the Doctor’s spurious spiritual shenanigans awaken and anger dormant spirits residing in the house. It’s up to the Ghostbusters to set things right and save aunt Lois.

The Review:

This episode was written by Richard Mueller who also wrote the novelization of the first Ghostbusters film. Ray’s aunt Lois made her first appearance in that novelization. Clearly Mueller’s previous immersion in Ghostbusters has served him well because this is a fantastic episode. The humour, the designs, the pacing and the story all come together perfectly.

Slimer acts much more like the Slimer of the film than Slimer of the animated series and it suits him much better. He’s more of a troublemaker, and not by accident.Slimer is still affectionate towards Peter but this is now tempered with his joy in antagonizing Peter. His taunting and teasing of Dr. Venkman just feels very Ghostbusters.

The story is a really fun and clever take on debunking spiritualists. All of the tools of their fraudulent trade that Houdini laid bare back in the 1920’s are on display along with some more updated versions. It’s interesting to see so much actual history brought into the series.

This episode also features fantastic designs and transformations. There’s a great use of actual folklore with the inclusion of Russian house spirits called Domoviye (singular Domovoi). Once again the show really distinguishes itself by drawing on actual mythology and folklore.

The animation is absolutely top notch, with really impressive effects work. I would dare say that this is the most impressively animated episode in the series thus far.The proton streams are terrific and the camera effects like star bursts and lens flares are all realistically rendered.

This is The Real Ghostbusters as it should always be, firing on all cylinders. It’s funny, exciting and clever. And while this episode didn’t delve into the horror aspect of the series, there’s so much good going on here that I didn’t miss it. Besides, they can’t all be horror stories.

Best line of the episode:

Egon – “Hi Ray’s Aunt Lois.”

Rating: 5 out of 5 on the PKE meter

  1. A great early episode from the series, for sure!

I forgot that Richard Mueller had also written the novelization.

I had a economics professor at university named Richard Mueller, think it was the same guy? 🙂
